Laine, thank you for calling out the styling for Willow here. I get that it’s supposed to make her look kind of sick and un-Willow-like, like she’s letting the magic turn her into a different person entirely- but honestly it feels cartoonish to me. And I hate that denim shirt with the sleeves that she wears; it just amplifies her to an almost cheesy supervillain status and I just don’t like that they went in that direction. She just feels so off, and there are moments when she’s talking to Buffy where her bravado almost feels a bit like Faith’s, but it’s so not Willow that it doesn’t work at all. Because Faith with the Mayor and in season 4 was still Faith. This whole thing with Willow and ‘the magics’ was just executed so poorly, because we can no longer even connect with Willow at all.
Before I forget, love the Hard Candy mention! Elliot Page was so convincingly menacing in that movie- I remember it really freaked me out when I first saw it (years and years ago, because we rented it from blockbuster and all we knew about it we got from the back of the dvd case).
Jonathan’s story is so painful to me, because I grew up socially in a similar situation and didn’t fit in anywhere until grad school. So his loneliness and desperation is something that I find really affecting, even though I’m more removed from it now. It’s one of the reasons I have trouble with Andrew’s story in season 7 – because Andrew just… sucks, to me. I understand that he brings a silly element but I could care less. Jonathan’s story was much more interesting to me and I found it much easier to empathize with him as a character. Anyway, thanks for another great episode!
