  1. Hi there! I’m very much still listening to every episode, just very busy with work at the moment, but I wanted to leave a comment before I forget. Season six is one I have mixed feelings about, but I do like a lot of what they tried to do with it. Life Serial is an episode I hardly ever rewatch, not because it’s especially bad, but more because I just find it kind of boring to watch, which actually makes me think about season six as a whole and what it’s trying to express and about viewing the issues that come up in BtVS as metaphors for real life issues. Because season six has long been talked about in terms of Buffy’s depression arc, and I really do like that the show went there and tried to depict that, but I can also see where it kind of falls short as a story. As you both pointed out, some of the difficulties are in how to show Buffy struggling with life stuff without it feeling like too much stuff is being piled on her to an unrealistic and her friends feeling oddly negligent. Depression can absolutely make everyday life harder, but I think the show doesn’t always know how to show that while incorporating the supernatural in a way that still feels real. I like what they do in episodes like Entropy and Gone, and I like what they’re trying to do in Life Serial too; I just don’t find it enjoyable to watch, even with Buffy having her more wacky/comedic moments. And that makes sense, because they’re telling a rough story, and Buffy’s struggles work a whole lot better than the magic/addiction metaphor, but sometimes it does feel like Buffy’s load could be lightened and the writers are deliberately putting more difficulties on her in a way that feels a little forced. But overall, I do really think they pull off the overall arc of just being worn down and feeling kind of hopeless and still having to work every day to keep things from getting worse, and the toll that can take on a person (and the people who depend on that person, and what happens to relationship dynamics as well). Thanks for another wonderful episode and discussion!
