So I just started listening to the podcast episode for Becoming Part 2, but I wanted to say just a couple of things about this episode (I do plan on rewatching Becoming Part 1, but haven’t yet).
I did watch Becoming Parts 1 and 2 as they originally aired, and they’re probably the reason that season 2 remains my favorite. I even remember totally buying into Whistler’s whole narration when I originally watched, and how gutted I was at the end of part 2 with the Sarah McLachlan song playing.
I wanted to link a video (that just came out, which was fortuitous) from MelinaPendulum on YouTube. The video is her list of takes on certain things in BtVS–some more controversial or unpopuular than others–and the entire thing is pretty long, but I wanted to just rec one specific part of it where she talks about Kendra’s death and the treatment of women of color on the show: https://youtu.be/bnLV4VIxJyU (the Kendra section starts at the 10-minute mark and ends at 15:04). I think she makes a lot of great points in that section, particularly about how this show deconstructs so many tropes in horror but almost seems to lean into tropes about race in horror. I also had no idea Cordelia was originally going to be cast as black, so that was fascinating to learn. You might have come across this video already, but I hadn’t heard of this YouTuber so her videos are totally new to me and so far they seem great.
Also, I keep forgetting to do this, but in case it comes up ever in the future, my pronouns are she/her/hers.
Also also, I can’t remember if I mentioned this in one of my previous rambling comments, but I once got the Drusilla-style french manicure at a nail salon when I was in college. 🙂
Thanks for another great episode! I’m really looking forward to rewatching the show itself and listening to the Becoming Part 2 episode, as stress relief during the beginning of the fall semester.
