  1. So I’m only about halfway through the episode, but I wanted to comment on a couple of things re: the acting, before I forget:

    You mentioned the look on Giles’ face when he’s possessed (if that’s the right word; I don’t know if you discuss that in the episode, but maybe it’s more of a parasite thing?) – it made me think of Giles’ colder side in general, which is different from what we see in this episode, but can be similarly chilling. When you brought it up in the episode I specifically thought of when Giles killed Ben, and the look he got on his face when he did. It’s distinct from the look he has here, and from the look he gives in Buffy’s nightmare earlier in season two (?) when he’s choking Buffy and turns out to be the Master. Like, it’s still Giles, but he has a much colder affect. At first I thought it was like Giles as Ripper, but even that’s not quite true, since Ripper!Giles was more reckless. But when it comes down to it, I think Giles has a more practical side, and a willingness to do the dirty work to get things done if he feels that he needs to. There’s a small moment in a season 5 episode where he does something off-screen to torture one of Glory’s minions. It’s just a really interesting facet of Giles’ personality and I love how ASH plays it (and how he plays all the different facets of that character).

    Also on the acting, I never thought about it before but I think there are a couple of reasons I was always able to buy the Buffy/Angel relationship and not feel the age difference as that much of an imbalance: the first was probably that I first watched the show as a pre-teen/teen and at the time thought I was already completely mature so didn’t see the age difference as a huge issue, but beyond that, I think it was really a) SMG’s acting; I think she portrayed Buffy with a level of seriousness and maturity that really came across well, and b) the chemistry between her and David Boreanaz. Because they were close in real life, and had that kind of friendly chemistry, I think it made the relationship on screen seem more balanced; it made them seem more like a team.

    I agree about Xander and Cordelia’s relationship feeling a bit lacking- they’re drawn to each other but don’t seem to actually like each other at all a lot of the time. I’ve always assumed it was just something I didn’t get, so I’m glad to hear others found it weird. I do like their dynamic in certain episodes, but I do feel that of all the couples during the high school years of the show, their relationship felt the most like a typical short-term high school relationship to me.

    1. Hi Jess, so nice to see a comment from you! We’re doing alright. This episode was recorded before all the stay at home orders were given, so if it seems a bit lighthearted, that’s why.

      That’s a really good point about SMG and David B. being really good friends and that having an influence on their chemistry. I think I just need to admit to myself that I just don’t find the character of Angel very compelling, and that’s where I find a lot of my problems stemming from. But that’s a discussion for another time, haha.

      I’m so glad someone agrees with me on the Xander/Cordelia relationship! I just don’t feel it right now. Maybe I will as I get more into it, but for now, not so much.

      And yes, ASH is amazing. His acting is sooo subtle, but conveys so much. I love him, and GREAT point about a few of the Glory episodes. 🙂
